Learning objective: To explore and secure understanding of character
To assess understanding of character in any text, invite volunteers to take part in a round of Pictionary.
An artist is handed a slip of paper on which is written a character’s name. Their task is to draw pictures on the board (no words allowed!) that represent that character, eg for Lady Macbeth: a spot, a serpent, a flower. The class must guess the character.
This can be repeated a number of times, with the proviso that no object or scenario can be drawn twice.
The question ‘How did those images help you guess the character?’ is key to drawing out and developing students’ understanding of that character.
