Learning objective: To build awareness and variety of sentence structures
Ask students to write a short, single clause sentence – one containing just one verb.
Display a bank of conjunctions: those that students frequently, intermittently and rarely use.
Ask students to add a second part or clause to their sentence using one of the conjunctions from the bank.
Ask students to repeat the activity, using as many different conjunctions to expand their original single clause sentence as possible, eg
- I ate a pie when I got home.
- I ate a pie because I was hungry.
- I ate a pie while playing Call of Duty.
Take feedback: hands up who used ‘and’ in one of their sentences… who used ‘because’… who used ‘although’… who used ‘while’? Invite students to share their examples for each conjunction as models of usage.
