Learning objective: Develop spelling strategies
Answer the question ‘how do you spell [this word]?’ with ‘how do you think it might be spelt?’ Note the result on the board. At any pause, ask which letters might come next – and note all possibilities on the board.
Prompt students to consider options by suggesting other words containing the same phoneme/spelling pattern, eg cough, rough, tough, etc
Once you have compiled a range of options, ask the student to select the version they feel is most likely to be the correct spelling. Your board might look something like this:
