Learning objective: To support students’ confidence in tackling a new text by ‘tuning into’ it before reading.
Before reading any text – a class reader, an article, poem, play, etc – ask students to explain their expectations of the text based on its physical appearance, cover image, title/headline, subhead, layout – in fact anything they can see without reading the first sentence. Students might consider genre, plot, character, viewpoint/opinion, intention, etc.
Read the text to evaluate how accurate students’ predictions were.
