Learning objective: Using context to understand unfamiliar vocabulary.
Give students a sentence containing a made-up word, eg When I saw its fangs, my heart spiggled. Invite the class to guess the meaning of the word. How did they work it out?
Look for answers that recognise the contextual clues of ‘fangs’ and ‘heart’.
Repeat the process for any unfamiliar words encountered in the next text you read together.
