Learning objective: build awareness of spelling patterns
Make spelling an integral part of your lessons.
Whenever a student asks for a spelling – or any new vocabulary is introduced – focus on its spelling. What spelling patterns can students see in that word? A double letter? A digraph(eg ‘ck’)? A common prefix or suffix?
For each of the patterns identified in the focus word, invite students to suggest other words that feature the same pattern: other members of its spelling pattern family.
