Learning objective: To develop awareness of the writer’s intention
Just as the question What is the writer’s intention here? is vital when analysing a text, it’s equally vital when creating a text. For any writing task, ask students to identify their intentionas a writer at each point in the text. How do they want the reader to respond to:
- each of the characters in their story
- the place they are describing
- the events they are narrating
- the point they are making in an argument
- the evidence they are supporting it with
- etc.
And how will they achieve that intention?
Intention should be at the heart of any and every choice that student writers make.
