Word class

Understanding verbs is the key to understanding sentence structure. So the first step in building your sentence construction skills is to be sure you know the difference between nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.

Verbs
Verbs refer to an action or event. You need a verb to complete this sentence:
I ___ a pie.
Nouns
Nouns name an object, person or place. You need a noun to complete this sentence:
The ___ fell over.
Adjectives
Adjectives describe nouns. You need an adjective to complete this sentence:
I ate a ____ cake.
Adverbs
Adverbs describe verbs. You need an adverb to complete this sentence:
I walked ____ to the door.
